Kick the bucket – сыграть в ящик

Definition: to die

Example

If your boss doesn’t give you less work to do, you’ll kick the bucket

Kick: to hit something with your foot

Bucket: an open container with a handle, used for carrying and holding things, especially liquids.

History of the idiom:

Comes from a suicidal technique used years ago. A man would tie a rope around his neck, secure the other end tightly to a tree branch while standing on a bucket. He would then proceed to kick the bucket out from under himself, thus killing himself and...kicking the bucket.
