Definition: to survive with a tight budget
I've been working hard for the last few months trying to make ends meet, but something I'm not even expecting always comes up and I have to pay for it.

History of the idiom:
The metaphor was originally to do with wearing a shorter (tighter) belt because you have been frugal, and are eating less, your belt would more easily fasten.
Ends: the last time or period of event, activity or story
Fugal: simple and plain and costing little
